Now is as good a time as any to rethink the lighting in your home.
- What’s right?
- What’s wrong? (The problems will be glaring.)
- What mood are you after?
- What kind of lights do you like?
- What do you need?
- What do you want?
A good place to start is by considering the overall lighting in a room; and these key points will help you put your home in just the right light.
1. Practicality
First and foremost, your lights should – at the very least – illuminate your room; and the good news is that you don’t have to forego elegance, luxury or playfulness for your lighting to do just that.
Look at the elegant Curling LED Suspension Lamp by Serien (below). It’s available in a variety of finishes and sizes, which means it can be customised to complement your space.
Then there’s the Margaret Table Lamp by Fontana Arte (below). It has a support bag that holds it steady so that it can be placed on the back of an armchair or anywhere! How luxurious! Also available in a range of colours: elegant black or brown, and more playful yellow, blue or red.
2. Use of Space
You can optimise your space if you carefully consider how you use it. Does your spare room double up as a work space? Then your lighting solution will be guided by this. Do you socialise in the kitchen? Then you’ll need ambient lighting options along with brighter working lights.
The Viisi Suspension and Floor Lamp by Panzeri (below) uses space efficiently. It is a true statement piece. As a floor lamp, it is perfect to provide task or accent lighting. Suspended, it is ideal as part of layered lighting.
3. Timelessness
Choose timelessness over trendiness. Timeless design remains relevant for decades and, though it is difficult to predict what designs will stand the test of time, you can’t go wrong when you choose a piece that already holds that status.
How about this Pinecone Suspension Lamp by Paola Novane (below)? The blown glass diffuser, made using the ancient technique of caged blown glass, embodies a classic aesthetic with an element of surprise.
4. Artistry and Opulence
Yes, lighting has a job to do. But that doesn’t mean it can’t look good doing it. The artistry of the Mirage Suspended Lamp by David Dolcini for Karboxx (below) is unequivocal!
