1. Start with how you want each room to feel
Decide on the mood before you choose a single fitting. A lounge wants warm and soft; a kitchen wants bright and clear; a bedroom wants calm. The most common mistake is lighting every room the same way — it leaves a home feeling flat. Light each room for the job it does.
2. Layer your lighting — don’t rely on downlights
Rows of downlights give you flat, even light and little else. Good lighting works in three layers: ambient (general ceiling light), task (focused light for reading, cooking and working) and accent (pendants, wall lights, a chandelier or LED strips for mood). Mixing all three is what makes a room feel designed rather than simply lit.
3. Get the colour temperature right
Colour temperature decides whether a room feels warm or cold — and most people get it wrong. Warm white (2700–3000K) suits lounges and bedrooms; natural white (around 4000K) suits kitchens and bathrooms; cool white (5000–6500K) suits garages and task areas. Because the same fitting looks different in different light, it’s worth seeing it lit in person — which is exactly what our Newton Park showroom is for.
4. Match the fitting to the size of the room
A fitting should suit the scale of the space. A small pendant gets lost in a double-volume; an oversized one overwhelms a small room. Over a dining table, choose a fitting about half to two-thirds the width of the table, hung 75–90 cm above it.
5. Buy quality where you’ll feel it
You live under your lighting every day, so invest where it counts. Cheap fittings cost you later in mismatched colour, poor finishes and short lifespans. Good LED lighting lasts longer, looks better and uses up to around 80% less energy. Look for a proper warranty — the brands we stock typically carry 3 to 5 years.
6. Plan it early, not at the end
The biggest lighting mistake is leaving it until last, once the ceilings are closed and the walls are painted. Plan early and you get cleaner layouts, concealed lighting, proper feature placement and dimming. If you’re building or renovating, talk to us before the ceiling boards go up.
Lighting is about atmosphere as much as visibility — the best schemes are felt before they’re noticed. We’re happy to help you plan it properly.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between warm white and cool white?
Warm white (around 2700–3000K) is soft and cosy and suits living and sleeping areas. Cool white (around 5000–6500K) is crisp and bright and suits workshops, garages and security lighting. Natural white (around 4000K) sits in between and works well in kitchens and bathrooms.
Can I mix different lighting brands in one home?
Yes — the thing to keep consistent is the colour temperature, not the brand. We stock a range of trusted brands, so you can mix styles freely while keeping the light tone consistent from room to room.
Should I choose my lighting before or after painting?
Plan it early, ideally before the ceilings are closed and the walls are painted. Lighting affects how your colours and finishes look, and planning ahead gives you cleaner layouts, concealed options and proper dimming.
