6 Outdoor Lighting Ideas For Your Home Selective Lighting

Outdoor lighting can be considered as a treat for the eyes, but it needs to be done properly. Just like the lighting in your home can change the aesthetics, so can the lighting outside of your home.

We have a few lighting ideas to help you get started:

1. MARK PARAMETERS

When it comes to lighting your garden think about offsetting the lights allowing a considerable distance between them. This will lead your eyes naturally down the path. Some fixtures can be placed in your garden while others can be placed along the path.

#HELPFULHINT: Always consider the light that your outside area gets from the moonlight.

2. ADD TEXTURE & COLOUR

We know that lighting provides us with something that we need, but what about providing us with something that we want? Your outdoor lighting fixtures can also provide colour and texture to your area by placing them around interesting plants. Keep your garden’s charm once the sun has gone down.

3. MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU

Live dangerously and throw caution to the wind for once. If you want to colour outside the lines when it comes to lighting your pathway then do it. Think about lighting your trees or adding a few fairy lights in your trees to create a beautiful picture. A plus about fairy lights is that they aren’t overly priced.

4. DOWNLIGHTING FOR DAYS

Downlighting is much like moonlighting, but it’s brighter and less subtle. Your fixture will be placed high up and inside either a trellis, tree or eave so that it can cast a downward light over a large area. If you want to illuminate a large portion of your garden put your fixture up higher and if you want to illuminate a path place your fixture lower.

5. ACCENT YOUR FEATURES LIKE A MAKEUP ARTIST

If you have a feature in your garden that you would like to draw attention to then accent lighting is your answer. If you would like to point out either an architectural design, a plant or a feature think about using a specifically angled light.

#HELPFULHINT: Using a narrow beam spotlight from a hidden fixture will add flair and mystery to your lighting.

6. A SILHOUETTE TO DIE FOR

Your driveway or garden may have some plants that you would like to showcase by adding a touch of drama. Silhouetting allows you to do just this by placing a spotlight behind a feature and aiming it towards an adjacent wall. This will allow you to create an illuminated backdrop that looks stunning in the sunset.

SOME HELPFUL LIGHTING LINGO:

  1. DOWNLIGHTING: it creates a diffused, gentle light by aiming lights downward, usually away from a tree. It also creates a moonlight atmosphere, which is romantic and great for conversation.
  2. UPLIGHTING: this can be used to create drama using bold shadows and strong effects. By aiming your light upwards into a tree or architectural feature, you emphasise the contrast of dark shadows with bright light.
  3. CROSSLIGHTING: this allows you to eliminate a focal point from both sides. Always keep light pollution in the back of your mind and limit the amount of light used for cross lighting.
